    Comparing Electricity Costs

I am presently a Scottish Hydro Electric Customer on Economy 10 Tarriff.New pricing indicates I will be paying a Service Charge of £0.2183 per day(almost £80 p.a!!). Do other Power Companies have a Service Charge?

also - How do I know what tariff with other Providers is equivalent to the Economy 10 as I don't see it listed?

    Thank you

    Re: Comparing Electricity Costs

Most tariffs have a standing (service) charge. It can be between 5 and 8 pounds per month so at £6.50 your charge is not excessive.

On the comparison calculators, as your tariff is not listed then you will have to enter your total consumption and look at the predicted cost - ie ignore how much it says you will save - just compare the annual cost with your current annual bill. The order that the tariffs are returned should still be accurate.

The trouble is is that Economy 10 is designed to give you off peak rates during the day that are almost as low as Economy 7 night time rates. Having six price bands per day is awkward! Are you taking advantage of the off-peak hours?

Thank you for those bits of info. My concerns were raised when some sales people from another Power Provider , recently suggested other companies didn't have a daily charge just for the priveledge of buying electricity from them.

I don't always maximise my off-peak power, I must admit!!

    Re: Comparing Electricity Costs

That is partially true, other suppliuers do have tarrifs that do not have a standing charge. But so does your current provider. Other suppliers have standing charges on their Economy 10 tarriffs (if they even support them). It appears you may have been a victim of clever marketing and partial truths.

If you don't make complete use of the the E10 meter, ask your current supplier for a tarriff change, go for E7. E7 meters are a lot more proflic and there will be many pricing and tarrif options anow open to you some will include a standing charge some won't. Which one will be better for you will dpeend soley upon your consumption of energy which you current supplier will be able to calculate an estimation for.

The answers I give you may not want to hear. The answers I give may not be easy. The answers I give will be the truth. If your prepared for this - ask away!
