    Water supply pipe

    Afternoon all,

I wonder if anyone has had this from United Utilities recently and how they responded to it.

I have been told that my (1890's) terraced house has a connection to a common supply pipe and that, because it is so old, it needs replacing at my cost but not at my convenience.

I must have this work done within 3 months or they will carry out the work and reclaim the costs from me.

My water works ok and flooding isnt an issue so why the demand for this work to be done?

This is the second time they have requested this type of work - the first was a warning that this may need doing which was within a week of being offered insurance against this type of thing. hmmm.

Their letters are addressed to 'The Occupier'.

I can't help thinking that this stinks. Your thoughts please guys...

    JJ

I believe they would need (1) powers and (2) grounds. Unfortunately I don't know know the answer to either question, however you are entitled to ask and to be informed.

I call that giving them a length of rope....

JJ - This site below from the regulators Ofwat may help, it shows the typical responsibility for water mains supply pipes, if you need further independent clarification, or have a problem with liability or inconvenient timing of the proposed works from your supplier.... just contact Ofwat.

Thanks Guys, I'll ask UU for clarification of exactly what needs replacing and why.

The Ofwat link particularly useful - thanks.

    Re: Water supply pipe

Ya welcome JJ - After you confirm your total liability - get a few quotes for the replacement works from reputable Water approved contractors. The costs can vary considerably for this kind of work, with the utility companies charging even more..therefore I suggest shopping around for quotes.
