We have been quoted £800 to install a 'warm up' electric system. The reason we are considering this route is having looked into the installation costs of the gas option at cost of £3k plus it seems the cheaper way to go, but we are concerned about the running costs for a 35 sq mtr area, we are considering using three different thermostates for the 3 different open plan areas, (conservatory, dinning room and kitchen) and also gas radiators as a top up source of heating, we like the idea of having warm feet on a tiled floor. Our current energy supplier is Scottish Power for both gas and electricity, we currently pay approx £940 per year.

Utility Cost Comparisons - 2nd time of posting.

I have received no response to my first posting. I am obviously not alone in not being able to solve my problem but I will post it again just in case there is some one with a better brain reading this. Previously I had my gas and electricity supplied by British Gas but I have now moved to a rural area where there is no piped gas. The gas supplied is LPG into a tank which supplies the hot water and central heating system and I am informed the cost of the LPG is 30% more expensive than piped gas. The cost on my first bill from Calor is at a unit proce of 31.30p per litre plus 5% Vat in addition to which I have to pay an insurance on their tank. In comparison my first electricity bill is charged at 5.31p per unit plus 5% vat. I understand on average I will need 2 x tanks of LPG per year which will cost £738.00 approximately. Can any one inform me where I can go to find out if it would work out cheaper by buying electric radiators or is there some mathematical equation that I can use to compare the LPG cost with the electricity cost. I know the units charged against are different but I am looking to compare them on a level playing field so to speak. Any help would be appreciated. In the seven days we were away our unoccupied house consumed 127kWh. Before we left I made sure all TVs, computers, printers, chargers, baby monitors etc were turned off at the wall. Our gas boiler should not have required any electric for its control panel as I had set the heating and hot water so that they wouldn't come on. The only thing still on were a fridge and freezer. Our usual usage is between 180-190kWh per week - but I am amazed that it seems that only around a third of this is something I can control. On this basis I am paying nearly £1000 a year before I even turn on a light - does anyone have any suggestions / explanation for this? I live in a nearly 100 year old detached house which had the wiring and meter completely replaced around 2 years ago.

Standing Charges

I have recently bought an apartment in a new development and the whole development is served by SWITHC2 which provides hot water, heating and electricity. I have now received the first bill and I have been charged for the consumption of heating, water and electricity but I have also found a voice STANDING CHARGE calculated at £1.49/day. In 40 days i have therefore been charged for £50.00 for utilities and £61 for service charges. Because the whole development is served by central heating and cetral hot water, I can not switch on another suppleir, and i have the feeling that SWITCH 2 is overcharging me and all the owners. I need to highlight that the development is complosed of 60 flats. Therefore, if each apartment is charged at £1.49/day (as i suppose), at the end of the year SWITCH2 is having more than £30,000 as "standing charge". I have been told that the "standing charge" are paid for The operation and maintenance of the central plant and the energy distribution network. • Maintenance of the consumer interface unit, metering and controls located in the consumers property, but excluding radiators, valves and pipework. • Full guarantee. • The Standing Charge for all incoming utilities, e.g. gas and water • Billing and Administration of the system. • Management and tendering for all required fuel to minimise the costs of running the system But honestly, i think that £30,000/year is a bit expensive. Because I am not British and I do not know where to seek for advice, I wonder if I can search for any remedy before going to a solicitor and apply the Court. Is there any association that can assist me in finding out if this cost is correct or is there anything else i can do in order to reduce this cost? Thank you very much in advance.

business electricity bill

Hi, I am writing to you in desperation. Is there anyway I can speak to you over the telephone or fax you my bill history over this last winter so you can see clearly what the problem is. I had my meter read on the 15th of September, and received a bill for £147 which I paid. I then get a bill upon bill throughout the winter ( my business closes at the end of September until May) the latest bill is for £2,236 which is ridiculous, especially as usage was for the winter when I am closed. They are now saying that I am tied into them 'British Gas' and my electric bill rates went up in December from a 7.9 to a massive 23, rate and if I signed up with them here and now they would reduce that to 12. I said I wanted to look for a competitive quote to which they said I couldn't as I was already tied to them anyway so I had no choice,, yet when they sent the new agreement they thanked me for choosing them which I didn't but had to do. I have been a BG customer for over 30years in that business and I am truly struggling to get to grips with all this mess.

excessive electricity use

I stay in a 3 bedroom house,2 adult and 3 grown up kids, with gas central heating and a gas cooker, I've worked out my average kwh for the last 5 years and its 21000kwh per year,£54 per month, about average looking at some of your other posts, but my electricity average is approx 8700 over the last 5 years, just the usual things, ie; 3 tv's, 2 computers, tumble dryer, wash m/c, microwave, dishwasher , and british gas has just bumped me up from £60 per month to £109 for my electricity, should the usage be as high as this?

Excessive Electric usage through Storage Heaters

I have quite a major problem with my electric storage heaters. I've recently ran up a bill of £533.63 for the quarter of 7 November 2007 to 7 February 2008. Its for a rented 2 bedroom flat with only 2 people living in. This is the first bill we have received and it says my day usage is 1443 units, but my night usage is 8016 units! I am on Economy Seven as well. After doing a bit of testing, I have been able to work out its the electric storage heaters that have caused such a huge bill. To try and reduce the sheer amount on energy being used, I have set the 'Input Control' to low and the 'Boost' function is off as well. However I noticed that last night with 3 heaters set to this, I still used up 38 units. From other sources I use up around about 4 units (established through testing), so even if we round that upto 8 units, my heaters are still using about 10 units each, every night! Is this normal, because that would still cause a damn high bill. I appreciate that when the weather becomes warmer, I wont have this problem - however I still a). Have a £533.63 bill to contend with! Should I contact the landlords as if the heating is using more electricity than it should, I shall probably making a claim for them to help with the bill. b). Next winter I shall only have this issue all over again. Any assistance would be most appreciated, as I am only a modest wage earner and this is causing alot of stress! P.S. The Immersion Heater is not on either.

E ON uping my payments

EON have very nicely sent me a letter today saying they are uping my bill from £71 a month to £92 even though am £27 in credit with them, they say they have reviewed my bill from what i spent last year and thats why they have put my bill up and said they will look at it again in feb... how can they do that???

Faulty installation of storage heater

Last December I moved into a newly-converted rented property and two months later received a huge electricity bill. I have no previous experience of storage heaters, but I eventually discovered that the storage heater had been wrongly installed, as the insulation panel had not been put into the unit. Because there was virtually no heat left in the unit by about 4.00pm throughout December, January and February, when we had the coldest winter for 30 years, I had to use several additional heaters just to have the room at a bearable temperature. I am trying to get an expert's view on how this would affect consumption and effectiveness of the heater, aside from the fact that in the mornings the cover was so hot it could have been extremely dangerous. The heater has just been correctly installed, I believe (as I wasn't actually present when the electrician was here) and does seem to be operating very differently. Please can anyone answer this question?

Economy 7 Electricity

Hi Scott I'm hoping to move into a 1 bedroom flat that uses economy 7 heating. I dont know who the current supplier is but I was wondering if you could give an average monthly price/estimate of the cost of the electricity? I'm also concerned that there wont be enough hot water to shower or have a bath in the evenings! Through January and February I tried to switch energy provider to EDF. They messed up and took over supply for a neighbouring flat, but it took hours of calls to work this out. In the meantime, they took money from my account as an initial payment (this was on the 26th February) I was told they would have to investigate and the cash would be refunded to my account within 14 days. My last call to them was on the 18th March, when they were really snotty with me, I was told that they had issued a cheque on the 12th March to refund my money, but they had posted it to themselves (she told me it was too complicated to explain). I asked her to explain on numerous occasions how this could happen, to no avail. I was offered £40 compensation. It is now the 24th March and still no cheques I have emailed customer complaints at EDF and copied it to the energy ombudsman on the off chance that this might stimulate some action. I am now fed up of it and want it resolving. I will not give in. They have taken my money and provided no service, apart from making my life that bit more hassled Anyone got any further ideas of what to do now?

Rip-off EDF

Is it acceptable for energy suppliers such as EDF to help themselves from customers' accounts? In the early autumn, EDF wanted to increase my gas payments to £60. I rang and agreed a new sum of £45 pcm and have a letter confirming this. However, in November and December they helped themselves to £60 each time. Because they also wanted to tie me into a two-year fixed rate, I decided to leave, used moneysupermarket.com to do a comparison and moved to NPower (who, by the way, screwed up the switchover and initial readings). At the start of January I realised I hadn't had a final statement from EDF, rang them and discussed the situation with a very nice woman from Worthing who apologised for what had happened and sent me out a final statement, dated 9 Jan, showing EDF owed me £129.86. I rang today, 28 Jan (ie three weeks later) to find out why this money hadn't been paid and the customer 'service' rep said he would activate payment and it would be with me in another 5-7 working days (ie probably take two weeks). When I queried why it hadn't been done I was told that it usually took up to 28 days and 'they had another fortnight'. But this is my money - a not insubstantial sum - and if EDF is doing the same to other customers, how much money are they making off us? It is disgraceful they can behave like this, helping themselves and then hanging on to your cash. Has anyone else experienced similar? It would be good to hear from you.

Gas meter display is blank!

Hi I was wondering where I stand in terms of paying for my gas usage as my meter display is blank and the last actual reading was taken in March 2008. However when i contacted them they made reference to their being a problem with my property and that they were attempting to resolve it as part of an ongoing issue. I was assured i would be contacted. This never occurred. I wrote to British Gas but received no reply. It became apperent that British Gas had no record of them supplying my electricity. I have recently received a quaterly bill for electricity from E.ON for £280.00 using the Economy 10 tariff. For a small one bedroom flat that is not fully heated during the day, this seems excessive! What I'm asking about though is if you can tell me if there are any other suppliers of this tariff for postcode N14 7PE and their rates? I find that many of the comparison web sites do not have Economy 10 in their on-line comparison tables. Thanks Martin O'Shea.

Switch over problem

We switched gas and electricity suppliers in 2003, the electricity switch over was seamless - however the gas switch over was more complicated. 2003 is such a long time ago to remember specifics, but as I remember TRANSCO had supllied the wrong serial number for the gas meter, the problem seemed to be sorted and we switched our gas from AGAS to EON. This morning we have received a letter from EDF claiming we have not paid anything for our gas from 2003 and we will shortly receive a bill. We phoned EON querying the letter, EON confirmed they are our gas supplier and we have been paying them since 2003. We phoned EDF and they confirmed according to the national database our gas meter is registered with EDF. As it is the weekend, we will have to phone EDF on Monday to speak to the billings team for further details of how to proceed. After phoning EON again they confirmed that actually there maybe a problem with our property having two seperate entries on the database but they would need to look into it and will call us back on Monday. Having spoken to both these companies we understand that we will not have to pay twice for the same gas, but potentially EON may have to refund us everything we have paid to them for gas since 2003 and we will then have to pay EDF. As we have been on a dual fuel tariff with EON the refund may not cover the gas bill with EDF. We would have signed something back in 2003 requesting the switch over to Powergen, now EON so if there is a shortfall in money to pay EDF aren't they responsible? Surely EDF and EON can sort this out between them, without our involvement. Is there an independant regulator we can go to for further advice? Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

What next for energy prices

Scott, there is a substantial difference between buying gas, as British Gas/Centrica and all the other suppliers do to secure supplies and fixing the price! Do you seriously believe suppliers were buying gas at over £1 a therm last summer? This is how it works: BG(EDF, npower, E.ON, SSE, Scottish Power, British Energy, Total, Shell, Corona, Gazprom and everyone!) would never, ever, ever agree the gas price in let's say July, for January. They have wholesale contracts linked to indices which float up and down every day. In addition, they have trading operations which buy and sell gas every day of the year. They do hedge the price, but they can do that very cheaply. Remember that energy traders often invented the derivatives, hedging and so on that blew up the banks, so it's incredibly complex. But unlike the banks, energy companies know that the domestic end users end up holding the bill when the music stops, i.e, they will always get paid as long as people like to keep warm and out of the dark. Going back to July: the supplier has a cast iron contract to ensure supply at a price indexed to something or other: oil, power, carbon, whatever: he is getting the gas. He then goes and raises prices based on those of that day in July. Maybe he'll be right, maybe he'll be wrong. But if he's wrong, then has has no risk as he simply hikes prices next year. In July the forward price for gas all winter 09 was over £1 a therm, but so far this winter it's averaged below 60 pence per therm. (1 therm =29.3071 kWhs). What happened to that extra 40 pence? Check out the profits next year. Every other domestic market in the world has a default option where everyone gets charged a floating monthly price based on wholesale costs. We don't in the UK, for three reasons: 1 uniquely the billing cycle used to quarterly instead of monthly. 2 metering is a complete mess and hasn't changed since Edison, 3. Third Party Introducers would be unable to offer a meaningful comparison on a floating price. More importantly, they wouldn't get a commission!

Scottish Power

I have just ended a fixed rate term and the new gas unit cost has risen 60% and elec risen 30%. Reluctantly I have to accept these costs. This should increase my DD form £107 to about £160. They have however set the new DD tro £199/month. They wish me to effectively pay 5 quarters worth of power so that I have built up a balance of £400 at the start of the winter quarter. I am considering stopping my DD and starting a SO to pay say £170/month. Would I be wrong to do this? Imagine my shock to then receive the bill and find I am about £250 in debt by the end of the 1st 1/4 so they intended to double my monthly direct debit. I used a switch site and the estimate of annual consumption was in line with the figures my supplier confirms for a full year thus I am left to wrestle with the the thought of being ripped off as no allowance from the supplier for warmer times. To overcome this problem they give me stark choices of either paying this debt off now and start over - with a nice 25% increase in my current debit or I can leave as is so they can inflict a doubling of the direct debit payments to produce a very healthy surplus on their side of the account at the end of the first year. For me personally, I look forward with great expectations that energy companies reduce prices soonest so I can look elsewhere for my energy supplies as the actions of this supplier are not what I expected.

Utility Warehouse

I am constantly hearing and seeing comparisons been made between e-on, British Gas and EDF, why isn't the Utility Warehouse ever mentioned?

M&S and Southern Electric

Hi I have just been approached by someone in M&S offering me a great deal to sign up with M&S and Southern Electric for cheaper gas and electricity Has anybody else heard of this or actually using them? Today i got in from work and received a gas bill from Atlantic Gas (who also supply our electric). I opened the bill up to see that we apparently owe £1530.46 from Sept - Dec 2008...!! Me and my partner live in a privately rented small terraced house in Leicester, 2 bedrooms and we have the heating on for a few hours a day during winter. We have a gas cooker which we use max of 45 mins a day. We have been receiving estimated bills for nearly 2 years now, they have always been very low, around £40-£50 every quarter. We assumed, with this being our first house, that was probably correct. We always pay the bill online. We never had anyone come round to read the meter until December 2008. As soon as i received the bill today i was immediately on the phone to Atlantic. The advisor laughed and told me 'not to worry' as it was 'definately a mistake' when i explained the situation. He then asked me to read the meter, which, i will be honest, i didnt know how to. He talked me through it and i gave him the readings. He also asked for the serial number on the meter. He then proceeded to tell me it was correct. After much panicking and explaining to him that i simply cannot pay that he explained why it was so much. Apparently the estimated meter readings were obviously estimated extremely low, as this has been over 2 years, the actual ammount we now owe has been calculated over 2 years. He then told me my gas bill should be £70 a month, which i still think is very high for just two people. He spoke to his manager and told me they will accept a payment plan over 2 years instead of 1 year, and i will now be charged £70 per month plus £1530 divided by 24 months which is £63 so in total they want to charge us £133 a month for gas alone!! I told him there is still no way we can afford that, and there really isnt. We are both in our early 20's with full time jobs which only bring in 12k and 10k each. On top of all our rent, and various other bills, we would have to starve to even get near that ammount each month. He didnt have a lot else to say, except he would give me a couple of days to think about it, and to call them back. Im extremely stressed out, and have no idea what to do next. First off, i assume they cannot get away with estimating our quartly bills that low, and then hitting us with a huge bill 2 years later?? Any advice will be greatly received and i will reply to all questions asked. Thank you.
