They seem unstoppable, and have me over a barrel as if I take up insurance elsewhere I have a 90-120 day qualification period. Couple of questions: i) Do consumers have any rights to expect some degree of stability on premiums within a "fair-play" framework? ii) British Insurance are still advertising on line lower rates for new joiners whilst doubling premiums for existing policyholders. Is this fair? (Again short of cancelling, joining again and going through a new qualification period I cannot access these rates). iii) Is British Insurance typical of the Mortgage insurance market, or are there reputable firms that I could trust to play fair with me? There is no claims history, negative or otherwise. Halifax, lloyds tsb and e-sure have also refused. Churchill have offered cover but will not include public liability cover in respect of our guests. The problem with many insurers today is that if you don't fit the 'standard' model that they have on their quote screens, then they are not interested. Do you know of anyone who will do an individual home cover policy that would include cover for the very limited risks involved in running a one bed B&B suite located in an annexe (former garage - properly converted etc) adjacent to the main house. Business activity level is only about 30-40% occupancy throughout a year. Policies designed for B&B owners tend to be offered by hotel specialist insurers and cost almost as much as we earn in a year from our low level activity.

I am waiting to see if my insurance is void

I am waiting to see if my insurance is void

Do we need after the event insurance?

Hi, hope someone can help me as im not sure what we need to do! Last year our dog ran away from our house whilst my husband was cleaning his car; as soon as he realised our dog had gone, he went to look for him, firstly to the main road where he didnt find him, and then other areas. After this he went back to the main road and this time found our dog had been run over and died, the car driver was understandably shaken as was my husband. My husband gave him his details but did not get the drivers details (the poilce also talked to my husband at the scene). Some months later the wife of the driver called and spoke to me (as my husband was away) and we had a good chat in which i asked if there was anything i could do to help, she said that their insurance company had told them that we did not have insurance so they could not do anything, we have never to this date recieved any letter from insurures regarding this matter. I said that we would be happy to pay any costs that they had incured, i.e. damage to their car. The drivers wife gave me their phone number and i said that i would get my husband to call her back but i lost the number and had no way of finding it as i did not know their names. My husband has now recieved a letter from their solicitors stating that they have taken out after the event insurance and that they want to claim for injuries (stated as whiplash type injuries to the neck) and financial loss. Should we pay any expenses asked of us or do we need a solicitor and/or after the event insurance (we have no pet insurance) in order to deal with this matter. I obtained a quote from moneysupermarket.com and specified my no claim bonus of over 10 years. The system (moneysupermarket or hastings essential) did not inform me that no claim bonuses were not accepted if it was outside of the UK or Europe. I accepted hastings essential quote and paid the full years premium. It was only after week when I queried something else with hastings that they informed me that the no claim bonus had to be within the UK or Europe. They then amended the insurance cover, charged me for the amendment and increased the poilcy by an additional some £64. Surely this cannot be. Either they should have informed me when I was transferred to their site, before I accepted the claim, that the no claim bonus must be from the uk or Europe and I would be charged extra for that. Furthermore, moneysupermarket should state that no claim bonuses may not be accepted by the insurer and the client should check with the insurer before they accept the quote. This is unfair and not correct. I have queried with other insurers and they were prepared to take the no claim bonus from outside the uk and europe. When I phoned in to Hasting Essential to cancel the policy as they did not inform me of the no claim bonus not being accepted, they want to charge me £45 for cancellation. This is a rip-off. Could you please provide me with your view on this as I feel that it is their fault for not informing me at the start of the quotation that I the no claim bonus outside the UK or euope would not be accepted. Had I known this, I would have looked for another insurer as the no claim bonus does reduce your premiums. I want to cancel the policy and go to a insurer who is prepared to take my no claim bonus but I feel that I should not be liable for any charges as I have not been informed upfront of no claim bonus. We called our insurance company and advised them of the issue, They stated they would need to have it tested, i thought that was fair enough so we had it picked up by another company who tested and stated the damage was due to wear and tear. I queried this and requested a second opinion and that has also come back the same APPARENTLY. Now the laptop in question was only just 12 months old when it started to play up and it was a top of the range Compaq so for it to break through wear and tear after 12 months i do not see as an acceptable reply. Now when we ask the insurance to take a look at the original report where Chemdry stated soot and smoke could corode it in the future they refuse to and state Chemdry were not specialists in the testing og the goods. So i asked the insurance why they use them as they had done to test various items including telly's worth 2000+ Where do we stand with there refusual to pay for the laptop ? I feel as though they are fobbing us off becuase the rest of the claim was settled through replacement and cheque payment.

Life Insurance whilst in Spain

Hi, My wife and I are just about to take a year in Spain. I'm tempted but can find a policy online for less than half of their price. I'm ready to proceed but I don't recognise any of the insurers' names so am worried that I am buying a piece of paper only. Do you have a recommendation for RTI insurance? Leak under the odd one out house who has own supply and not on the shared system the leak coming from the shared pipe which they are not connected to (confirmed by water board when they come to do assesment etc) We are covered by water company policy who are going to cap off a stop valve and instate seperate supply feed for the 3 houses on the shared water system. The leak has caused internal damage ie damp etc in the odd one out house they have gone to their buildings and contents insurer who are consequently sending an assesor down and the neighbours have asked for the insurance details of the 3 homes on the shared system so that their insurance company can claim against us for the internal damage. My question is must we supply this as firstly we were not aware they were on a seperate supply to the rest of us and their damp problem has not just happened over night but a period of time due to the leak under their property which we were not aware of until the water pressure dropped which triggered this whole sequence of events in the first place. I am happy to use my water insurance policy for the 3 of us on the shared supply but must I supply my insurance details to my neighbour for his internal damage which we were not aware of but he obviously new about.

Time taken by Norwich Union Direct to review a claim

Hi, am hoping I am not the only one experiencing this, otherwise I am the unluckiest persoon in the UK at the moment! I lodged a claim for my car with NU Direct back in May and within two weeks an engineer inspected the car, declared it a write off and suggested a settlement amount. I contacted NU to be told that my claim was being reviewed and they would call back. No call after a week. I phoned again, same story! And this has been a weekly response since then and its now September! In the meantime, I lodged a complaint, following their procedure. No response. I called the numbers in Liverpool, no respones. I sent a fax, no response. I have sent a complaint to the FOS, they are very busy, be patient. I sent an email to CEO's office, hrray, got an automated reply saying they would contact me with shortly. That was two weeks ago! Besides wondering if Norwich Union work more than one day a week and if they know how to read a calendar or clock, is it considered reasonable with the insurance industry to tak 3 months to process a claim, not to return calls when promised, to hide behind a call centre script clearly designed to get an agrieved customer off the line, etc, etc? I understand that, having dragged it out of one of the agents, that they are claiming the car has been modified and I didnt declare that. Sorry, but I am not a mechanic, how am I suppoed to know its modified? The next problem will be how to evict the spiders who have gladly taken up residence! Am sure I will need a permit from the RSPS! If I sound frustrated, I am! "Qoute me happy", but when they get your money, treat you with contempt!

Buildings Insurance - Shared Freehold

I recently bought the ground floor flat in a converted terraced house. I own half the freehold and the leasehold for the ground floor, and a married couple own half the freehold and the leasehold for the first floor. The joint building insurance policy has now expired and the upstairs freeholder is now pushing for its renewal. Am I legally obliged to do this? The rub is that my solicitor did not inform me of any joint policy, and since the upstairs freeholder was (and still is) living overseas and practicaly incommunicado, I had to take out my own combined buildings and contents insurance when I applied for a mortgage. So if possible I don't want to have to pay for another policy. From comparing the policies it would be cheaper for me to keep my existing policy than pay half of theirs. To further complicate matters, they rent out their flat. So will their insurance cover be different/more expensive since they are not owner-occupiers? Grateful for any advice. Apologies if I'm duplicating threads, I have seen similar questions but none that precisely answer my question.
