Confused [*-)] Missed/delayed departure on connecting flights - not covered!!!

Have flights booked for Australia and need to take out travel insurance. Have contacted a few of companies after doing comparison search and have been told that we will not be covered for delayed/missed departure when we make connecting flight in Hong Kong. We are still covered for everything else included in the Policy just not that. We are covered in the UK and Australia but not in Hong Kong. Does anybody know of any companies who do provide cover.

Reading the policy details regarding missed connections, generally it's pretty onerous on the customer anyway, for example if the flight is missed because you were just "late" without a quite spectacular reason for it, you'd find it hard to get an insurer to pay out according to the terms and conditions anyway.

Re: Missed/delayed departure on connecting flights - not covered!!!

Hi. Yes I found a Policy through www.travelcoverquote.com. It's an AXA Policy. Think it cost around £77 for the 4 of us and also included a declared medical condition. I opted for the premium policy but they do three levels of cover. As it happens I am making a claim on the policy. We missed our connecting flight in London due to a delayed departure in Newcastle. Put the claim form in last week and just waiting to hear back from them now. BA put us up in a hotel for the night and re-arranged flights with Cathay Pacific for onward journey to Australia and we didn't need to pay out for anything. It took a whole day off our trip though which was annoying so it's this part of the trip that we're making a claim for.

The Policy also covers if airlines go bust. This is unlikely to happen with the major airlines (BA, Quantas, Emirates that kind of thing) but you can't be too careful.

I also rang up the company just to double check and they confirmed that missed/delayed departures were covered.

    Hope this helps.

    Did they pay out?

I'm also planning a trip from Newcastle to Oz, via Heathrow,Hong Kong (3 days), then back via Bangkok (3 days) and Heathrow.

Would like to know this policy was the right one before I buy.

    Thanks,
    G

Re: Missed/delayed departure on connecting flights - not covered!!!

Flying from newcastle we missed our connectin flight at Heathrow due to fog. Missed check in by around 5 minutes but they refused to allow us on even with a 3 and 5 year old. BA re-arranged flight for next day with Cathay Pacific and put us up in hotel for the night. We went back to airport early next day so no chance of missing flight. We spent money in airport on food and drinks. Tried to put a claim in when we got back but all I got back was around half the premium - around £35 if I remember. I'd arranged with Cathay for a birthday cake as daughter was to celebrate her birthday on original flight and we had to pay for this. Insurance company didn't want to know. BA arranged hotel and re-booked flights. We lost a full day of our holiday which is what I was really trying to claim for but they didn't want to know. We still had to pay for our hire car and the private house we had rented even thougfor that day we were not there (we lost a full day) and then there was the stress involved too. I'd had to make calls to Oz from the hotel as we had a meet and greet service waiting for us at Adelaide Airport and the guy we rented the house off was also to meet us. I had spent months planning this trip as it was to be a "recon" trip to decide whether we were going to emigrate out to Oz. Heathrow is huge and Terminal 5 a nightmare. We arrived there around 9.00 pm and didn't get to the hotel until around 1 in the morning. No one about. Despite sending copy receipts to the Insurance company they were not really interested and despite going backwards and forwards with them they just sent out the cheque and that was it. The £35 or so that they sent was an absolute p*** take - pardon my french. I also had to make a claim for my wedding ring which I was unfortunate to lose whilst out there which has cost over £200 to replace. Apart from that we had an absolutely fantastic time. Hope you enjoy your holiday. Sorry for going on.
