    Whatever happens (Currys)

Hi New user so not sure if iv posted in the right place!!

In Jan 2005 i Bought from Currys a Plasma 42in T.V £1300 (9 Month Interest Free Credit) they advised me to take

out the whatever happens insurance (Since found out i didn't need to at the time of purchase but hey) anyways my

brother signed the agreement as i was unemployed at the time!! but the T.V was delivered to my Address in my Name

the T.V developed a fault 15th June 2009 rang up WH and a tech guy came said no problem they would pick it up on the 18th june and would take about 7 days to repair!!

On the 25th of june i recived a Voucher for £699 plus £6.66 towards my next WH cover for my new TV no phone call to say my TV could not be repaired anyways the voucher came in my Address but my Brothers name so can't use it rang them up to be told no problem send them back and they would change the name today iv recived a letter saying my brother has to write to them to change the name but they have been taking payments from my bank for the last 3 years for WH.

(the 1st 9 payments was taken from my brothers bank account me paying them then i payed the remaining balance off and changed the WH payments to come out of my bank account) i Rang and expained the ins and outs of why this was and they was fine about it!!

The £699 voucher is surpost to be for a TV the same speck as mine but the one on the voucher they have surgested is not no Fast Tex or Auto Install as was on my old philips one!! in total iv spent £1300 plus £330 on WH and they sent me £699 and im sure £110 of the WH was Miss sold to me as i was told i HAD to take it out on the day of purchase!! im not sure i will be using WH on my new TV if and wene its sorted as the TV will be £699 so if that goes wrong what will they allow me for a replacement £199.

    madmandy35:

Slightly lost in the detail except for one thing, £699 will get you a perfectly good brand new 42" plasma TV from Currys.

Replacing a 2005 model with a brand new 2009 model is a result methinks.

Are you saying the voucher is only valid for a specific model?

    Re: Whatever happens (Currys)

    Hi mandy

I think currys have almost done everything correctly apart from not correctly advising you of the situation when you phoned. The TV was originally purchased under an agreement with your brother, so everything will be in his name. It does not matter that you have taken over paying the WH cover, as you did not change the name on the actual contract, only the payment.

Is there any problem getting your brother to send them a letter with his signature assigning the replacement voucher to you? Ask them if they will accept a fax if this speeds matters up.

In regard to the WH cover offered on the day of purchase, were you told that it was compulsory to take out this cover? Or was it a positive sales offer, that they could offer peace of mind WH cover , but only on the day of purchase. Shops do prey on the 'high' customers feel when they spend money on a desired purchase. I have signed up to cover before in this situation but have cancelled within the cooling off period after further consideration.

Regarding replacement spec, currys will hold a list of which TV is equivalent. You don't have to go with their recommendation, you can purchase any other and use the £699 voucher towards this.

I personally rate the Panasonic Viera range and note that Currys have a 42" for £699 or if you want a 1080p spec, they have 1 on offer for £799. With currys if you find that another company offers a better deal for a stocked, item they will price match, if model the same.

    Re: Whatever happens (Currys)

    Hiya

Re-Jalexa the voucher had a Named TV on it yes!!

Re-Huckster the TV on the Voucher was from the Panasonic range!! I see what your saying but when i rang to change details in Oct 2005 the person i spoke to at WH was fine said everything was changed into my name at no time did she ask for any letter of confirmation from my brother (or i would have got one) as the TV was deliverd to my Address and in my name i guess she thought it was ok. But they want a letter now!! Its a miner problem as me and my brother haven't spoken since May 07. (have to get my dear old mum to act as a go between)

The WH Cover wasn't explained to us in the right way! after the sales pitch i was led to believe that to benefit from the cover it had to be taken out on the day of purchase! never read the small print but will do in future i guess its a case of a leason learnt.

    Thanks everyone for your replys

    Re: Whatever happens (Currys)

So you took out a £330 warranty on a tv and didnt read the small print. Thats abit stupid. You've been given £699 quid to get a new tv 4 years later and you're moaning about that? Surely you're smart enough to think that tvs have advanced within 4 years and prices change. Your tv isnt going to be all singing and dancing anymore... all tvs come with an auto tuner now. the older a tv gets the more expensive it will be to cover it. Purely because the older it gets the harder it is to get parts for it so taking out the cover on the day is the best thing any way. You're just thinking of yourself and trying to make the situation worse. at the end of the day you've been sorted out and you're getting a brand new tv with a brand new warranty... and you complain. Stop wanting something for free and just Live a little. How can you even think about spending 1630 pounds if you dont even have a bloody job. Thats rediculous in its own right, yet alone irresponsible.

    Thanks. Callum

    Re: Whatever happens (Currys)

RE-Callum if you read my 1st post it says i didn't have a job at the time!!! the truth was i had just started a job and wasn't able to get credit at that point in time just thought id save my fingers and just say i didn't have a job!! and the TV was payed for within 9 months all £1300 of it!! My TVs fault was a thin line running from top to bottom not even really noticeable but thought id get it sorted in case it got worse over time and was told it would be fixed in 7 days no problem as it wasn't anything meager (Yer Right) iv been with out a TV now since 18th of June and no im not sorted out still no vouchers received but brother has sent letter to them . if all TVs do have auto install then Curry's dont state this in the descriptions of there TVs some say they have it and some say they dont!! yes my TV was 3 and a half years old but you wouldn't know that was well looked after and still working fine (apart from thin line). im not after something for Free at all but im defo peed of with the way Curry's have dealt with me no call no letter to inform me TV couldnt be repaired just sent vouchers in Brothers Name and My Address so totally unusable by me or my brother. and as for thinking of myself LOL i have a Hubby and 4 teenaged girls i really havent the time!! but thank you for replying

    Thanks Mandy

    Mandy

Did you see the content of the letter your brother sent to Currys? Has he definately sent it? It is just that from your previous comments, I wonder if your brother is now the proud owner of a brand new TV. No offence ment, just a thought.

Currys would be correct in not discussing this with you, as due to the Data Protection, they can only discuss this with your brother as the contract was in his name. I think WH have just noted you as paying the direct debit for the cover. However, there is no excuse if they were rude.

I am sorry to say this. But it is only your brother who can chase this matter up with Currys. Perhaps speak to your mother, to see if he is willing to call them for an update.

    This must be a nighmare.

    Re: Whatever happens (Currys)

Almost 6 weeks and still no TV

I rang WH on the 22nd of July to be told Letter was now on there system and replacement Vouches in my name would be reissued and id receive them in a few days!!! 27th of July still no vouchers so i rang to be told no letter on the system and the original vouchers had not been received back (i posted them back 26th june and have a reply letter from them saying they have received my letter and they will retain the vouchers and would like a letter from Mr X XXXXX) witch was posed 2nd july and now they havent received.

i was told they would send me a disclaimer for my bro to sigh basically to say we havent got the vouchers and they will be classed as lost!! then around 5pm got a call from a WH to say they are sending me a Gift Card to the Value of the vouchers! with no name on!! so fingers crossed it wont be much longer!!

    Re: Whatever happens (Currys)

Hi I was just reading your post and if you still haven't got your tv my advice as a currys employee would be to pop into your nearest store, explain you problem and see what they can do as they should be able to either ring for you and get a straight answer or get some more vouchers sent out.
